Santiago de Compostela

Santiago de Compostela nightlife: wine on Rúa do Franco, Old Town pubs, student nights in the Ensanche and how Nuit will help you plan your night out.

Where to go out

  • Zona Vella (Old Town)The city's stone heart and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Pubs, some with live music, and a very mixed crowd.
  • Rúa do Franco & Rúa da RaíñaThe two classic streets for wine and tapas. Many nights in Santiago start here, one stop at a time.
  • EnsancheThe city's more modern district, with pubs and venues where the student crowd sets the tone during the academic year.

Santiago de Compostela offers something few cities can: going out at night through stone streets that are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, surrounded by students, pilgrims and locals. It's a small city, but its nightlife is far livelier than many people expect.

What nights out are like in Santiago

Almost everything starts in the Zona Vella, the Old Town. Rúa do Franco and Rúa da Raíña are the classic streets for going out for wine and tapas, a ritual locals call going "de vinos", and from there the night spreads across the pubs of the historic centre, some with live music and even traditional Galician music nights. When it rains, which in Santiago is often, the stone shines and the bars fill up: rain rarely cancels the plan. The Old Town is also largely pedestrian and easy to walk, so moving from one bar to the next takes just a few minutes.

The university sets much of the pace. During the academic year there's usually a buzz on weeknights too, especially on Thursdays, and the Ensanche, the more modern part of town, brings together pubs and venues with a big student crowd. In summer the city changes: fewer students, more visitors, and the big date of the Festas do Apóstolo in July, with fireworks in the Obradoiro square on the eve of the 25th.

Plans for every kind of night

  • Wine and tapas in the Old Town: Franco and Raíña, one stop at a time.
  • Live music: pubs in the historic centre, some with traditional music sessions.
  • Student nights: the Ensanche, especially during term time.
  • Something calm after the Camino: a glass of wine under the arcades and a terrace if the weather allows.
  • Festas do Apóstolo: plan ahead, because the city gets very busy.
  • Group celebrations: look for a club night with VIP tables and skip the wait at the door.

  • Shots: short videos and photos from each venue that expire, so you can see what the night looks like before heading out.
  • Routes: chain stops together with times and walking distances, perfect for the Old Town.
  • Public and private plans: ask to join open plans or create one with your friends, with a calendar and chat.
